Program: “PilotEdge: Real ATC for the Virtual Environment”
Speaker: Keith Smith
It’s well known that simulators are useful for practicing emergencies and the basic techniques of instrument flight. One area in which virtually NO progress has been made, though, is in the integration of other traffic and Air Traffic Control. Whether it’s a $29 installation of X-Plane or FSX or a $12MM Level D flight simulator, there really hasn’t been a reliable way of bringing real ATC into the cockpit.
PilotEdge is the first commercial grade service to bring human-powered ATC into the virtual environment. Simulators can now plug into our network, allowing pilots to put on a headset, tune the COM radios and work with controllers and other traffic.
When you call for your IFR clearance at a towered airport, a real person responds and issues a clearance that closely mimics the routing and local departure instructions that you’d receive in real life. You’ll see other traffic out the window, too, and hear them on the radio. Those are other real pilots out there!
This fundamentally changes what tasks can be meaningfully taught, practiced and honed in a simulator and is nothing short of a revolution for flight training. A typical $400 dual IFR training sortie normally yields one IFR clearance, and a handful of approach clearances at best. It’s small wonder that many pilots who get their instrument rating actually have very little exposure to REALLY flying in the system.
PilotEdge lets you fly in the system, build up your situational awareness and practice those communication skills for a fraction of the cost of doing it in a real airplane.
About our speaker: Keith has been passionate about aviation and computing from the age of 11. He is an instrument rated pilot, flying a Lancair 360 out of nearby Lincoln Park.
Meetings are usually held on the second Thursday of every month. Members and non-members are welcomed to attend.

Keith Smith delivered and well thought out and highly informative presentation about “PilotEdge” a new service that provides real time ATC service that interfaces with your flight simulator via the internet to make your, now interactive, flight training sessions much closer to reality with real controllers, real time traffic and pilot communications and more at very reasonable cost. This added facet to your simulator training flights will no doubt make your sessions a far more valuable VFR and IFR training tool. The active audience participation last night showed keen interest of those pilots attending.
As always Neil and Sean Nederfield and their crew provided a welcoming and spacious venue for our MAPA meeting and seminar last night. As if moving all of their aircraft out and back into their hangar and setting up tables and chairs and providing an excellent sound system were not enough, C & W also provided their complementary Gourmet Chili and Fixin’s Dinner for all attendees. What better place to have a Pilot’s Safety Seminar than in a working hangar at Caldwell Airport! C & W is a long-time supporter of MAPA and other pilot organizations. Neil, Sean and their crew deserve heartfelt thanks from the entire aviation community.
