Featuring: Hijacked – The Story of Northwest Airlines Flight 734 From the Left Seat

Speaker: Captain James Mancini (retired)

On Dec. 24, 1971, passengers and crew on Northwest Airlines Flight 734 had settled in for a typical flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to Miami. But about 15 minutes after takeoff, it became clear this would be no ordinary flight. A passenger in the first-class compartment was brandishing a handgun and herding first-class passengers into the coach cabin.

The man fired a shot and warned the cockpit crew he had a bomb. He promised not to hurt anyone if he was given $300,000 and a parachute, imitating a scenario that transfixed the nation a month earlier when hijacker D.B. Cooper parachuted out of a plane with his ransom over the Pacific Northwest. He has never been found.

The plane was diverted to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, where the FBI delivered a pair of satchels full of money. The hijacker, with his gun trained on the passengers, ordered them off one at a time, not realizing that the crew had exited the cockpit through the windshield. With no hostages and no one to fly the plane, the man surrendered.

Our guest speak, James Mancini, was the Captain of that flight.

About Out Speaker:

Jim Mancini started flying at Teterboro Airport in 1960. He holds Commercial, Instrument, Multi-Engine and CFI ratings. He did a 3 month stint with Braniff early in 1964 before joining Northwest Airlines where he served until 2002. He’s been a Line Pilot, Instructor, APD, Chief Pilot, Test Pilot and Ferry Pilot. After a 7 1/2 year retirement, he recently started working part time with the Bergen County Prosecutors Office in their Aviation Division.

Most memorable career moment: the hijacking which occurred Christmas Eve 1971, 30 days after the famous D. B. Cooper event that was also on Northwest. It was those 5 hours (which successfully terminated at Chicago O’Hare International Airport) that fundamentally changed the standard procedures in the industry.

Formed in 1957, this year marks the 53rd anniversary of the Mid-Atlantic Pilots Association, a non-profit flying organization dedicated to air safety, aviation education and flying camaraderie. All levels of pilots, student pilots and aviation enthusiasts are invited to join.

Speaker: Founder, President and Chief Instructor, Linda Scully

Last month, we held our first meeting at the Sunset Pub & Grill at Lincoln Park and people really seemed to like it. We’re going back again this month and we’re going to visit MAPA’s good friend and long-time airport tenant, Linda Scully of Aero Safety Training (an FAA approved Part 141 flight school, one of a handful in the New York City metropolitan area).

You may have heard that they’ve got a Redbird full-motion flight simulator there. We’ll get to look it over, get the skinny from Linda about it and maybe take it for a hop or two. The Redbird is set up with actual Cessna instrumentation and controls in a fully enclosed cockpit with wrap-around view.

MEET FIRST AT SUNSET PUB AND GRILL AT 6:30.
ALL INDIVIDUAL FOOD ORDERS PLACED AT 7:00.
TOUR AERO SAFETY TRAINING FROM 7:10 to 7:50.
DINNER BACK AT SUNSET PUB FROM 8:00 to 9:00.

About Out Speaker:

Linda Scully founded Aero Safety Training in 1993. An instructor since 1983, she was honored as 2009 Teterboro flight instructor of the year. Linda was the first Master Instructor designated in New Jersey in 1999.

Linda’s aviation journey started in 1978 with a $10 introductory flight. “I would pass an airport on the way to the Shore with a sign ‘Learn to Fly,’ Linda recalls. “Eventually, I got out of the car and asked questions. But Robbinsville Airport was closer to where I lived at the time. When I called there, they said, ‘Come down, we have a $10 introductory flight, no obligation.’ The instructor was afraid that when I saw this tin can of an airplane I would be frightened away, but I wasn’t. I just fell in love with it.”

Linda earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the College of St. Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ, and worked as an accountant while earning her pilot and flight instructor licenses. When she launched Aero Safety Training, Linda offered specialized safety instruction and “spin training” using an aerobatic plane. In 1996, she took over the flight school at Lincoln Park Airport.

Linda is a member of The Ninety-Nines Inc. International Organization of Women Pilots. In February 2010, she was selected as one of 10 winners in a nationwide “Make Mine a Million Dollar Business” contest sponsored by American Express.

Featuring: The Write Stuff – Finding Air Time as an Aviation Journalist

Speaker: James Wynbrandt

You read the aviation magazines and are fascinated by the pilot reports, the travelogues, and the profiles of fascinating personalities. Maybe you also wonder what’s involved in capturing those stories – getting the assignments, getting all the elements in place, and then writing about the subject in a way that captivates readers. James Wynbrandt, a pilot who lives in New York City and has written for many leading aviation magazines, knows. His assignments have taken him and his airplane from his home base at New Jersey’s Caldwell Airport as far as Alaska and the south end of the Caribbean Chain, as well as into the left seat of dozens of different airplanes. In his presentation James will revisit some of his adventures and tell the behind the scenes story of the work that goes hand in hand with them.

About Out Speaker

A professional writer, James Wynbrandt is a multi-engine instrument rated pilot and aircraft owner with seaplane rating and tail dragger endorsement. His work has appeared more than a score of aviation publications including Flying, Smithsonian Air & Space, EAA Sport Aviation and AOPA Flying, in addition to The New York Times, Barron’s and Forbes. He has authored ten books on subjects ranging from medical science and popular culture to political humor. He flies a Mooney M20K 252.

Speaker: Don Berliner

You could say that Johnny Cash’s line, "I’ve been every where, man" was written for Don Berliner who, along with his flying pals – "The Old Men" – really have been EVERYWHERE. They’ve been to Nevis in the Caribbean, Alaska, Honduras, the Maritimes and have flown the "circumference" of the United States, just to name a few of their cross countries. He’s an IFR pilot but these guys fly VFR and they fly for fun. And Don has the pictures and the stories to show for it. He themes touch on planning, practicality, safety, flexibility and, of course, fun. See you on June 10th!

Featuring: Gotta Love This Weather!

Speaker: Frank Lombardo, President, Weather Works

Whether you love or hate the weather, as pilots, we’ve gotta live with it. Our guest speak really LOVES the weather and he’ll be sharing that love. Although he doesn’t provide aviation weather services any more (learn why!), Frank’s weather knowledge and experience is both deep and wide. Topics he’ll cover include:

– How he got into the weather business (remember Hurricane Donna?)
– Besides the TV weatherman and the FAA weather briefer – who else makes up this industry?
– The role aviation weather played in his career past (and why he got out!)
– His favorite aviation weather sites and the strategies pilots can use to optimize their weather-related decisions
– Anecdotes about some odd-ball aviation-related weather assignments he’s had (don’t come late if you’re interested)
– The depth and breadth of his present-day weather assignments

About our Speaker:

Frank has always loved the weather. He dates his interest in the field of Meteorology back to 1960 when he witnessed and lived through his first memorable east coast hurricane, Donna, as she swept powerfully up the Atlantic Seaboard. Frank graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Earth Science / Meteorology and a minor in Math from Kean University. He attended Texas Tech University to pursue his masters’ studies, where he was involved in the study of severe weather, including a tornado chase team. Additional graduate courses were taken at Rutgers University in Climatology, Air pollution and Meteorological Statistics. Frank has instructed classes in Meteorology and Aviation Meteorology at both Texas Tech University and Kean University. Frank is a long time member of the American Meteorological Society. His vast experience in the various aspects of meteorology including but not limited to reconstruction of weather and forensic expert courtroom testimony, for the past 20 years, has earned Frank the highest level of respect among Government agencies, law firms, insurance companies and private business’. He is widely recognized as New Jersey’s Weather Expert. Frank is designated a Certified Consulting Meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society.

10 Things Other Pilots Do Wrong – MAPA’s Annual Kathy Jaffe Safety Seminar

photoMid-Atlantic Pilots Association

NOTE: SPECIAL DATE AND LOCATION (SEE BELOW)

Featuring: 10 Things Other Pilots Do Wrong

Speaker: Bruce Landsberg, President, AOPA Air Safety Foundation

Let’s be honest: When it comes to our fellow pilots, we’ve all got our pet-peeves. Maybe it’s the "helpful" right-seater who can’t keep his hands off the controls. The chatterbox who treats the CTAF like a party line. Or the genius whose prop blast creates a hurricane in your hangar every time he taxis by.

Well, here’s your chance to air those grievances, learn a thing or two about safety, and – just maybe – get a new perspective on your own (undoubtedly minor) imperfections. Join us for an entertaining, educational look at the things you told us drive you nuts about "other pilots."

About Our Speaker:

Bruce Landsberg has lead the AOPA Air Safety Foundation since May 1992. During his tenure, ASF has become the leading general aviation safety organization in the world and has been recognized with numerous awards on safety program excellence. He writes the monthly “Safety Pilot” column in AOPA Pilot magazine, a popular weekly blog in AOPA ePilot, and is a periodic contributor to AOPA Flight Training magazine. He represents general aviation safety interests before FAA, NTSB, National Weather Service, and various industry and international groups. ASF conducts free educational seminars all over the country and recertifies thousands of flight instructors annually. Additionally, it offers a world class website with more than 30,000 online course completions monthly.

Prior to joining ASF, Landsberg had careers with FlightSafety International in Wichita, Kansas, and Cessna Aircraft Company in marketing, safety education and business development.

A former U.S. Air Force officer, he holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in industrial technology from the University of Maryland.

Landsberg has logged more than 6,000 hours with airline transport pilot (ATP), single-engine, multiengine, and instrument flight instructor certificates, and has been an AOPA member for more than 35 years.
