Program: “PilotEdge: Real ATC for the Virtual Environment”

Speaker:  Keith Smith

It’s well known that simulators are useful for practicing emergencies and the basic techniques of instrument flight. One area in which virtually NO progress has been made, though, is in the integration of other traffic and Air Traffic Control. Whether it’s a $29 installation of X-Plane or FSX or a $12MM Level D flight simulator, there really hasn’t been a reliable way of bringing real ATC into the cockpit.

PilotEdge is the first commercial grade service to bring human-powered ATC into the virtual environment. Simulators can now plug into our network, allowing pilots to put on a headset, tune the COM radios and work with controllers and other traffic.

When you call for your IFR clearance at a towered airport, a real person responds and issues a clearance that closely mimics the routing and local departure instructions that you’d receive in real life. You’ll see other traffic out the window, too, and hear them on the radio. Those are other real pilots out there!

This fundamentally changes what tasks can be meaningfully taught, practiced and honed in a simulator and is nothing short of a revolution for flight training.  A typical $400 dual IFR training sortie normally yields one IFR clearance, and a handful of approach clearances at best.  It’s small wonder that many pilots who get their instrument rating actually have very little exposure to REALLY flying in the system.

PilotEdge lets you fly in the system, build up your situational awareness and practice those communication skills for a fraction of the cost of doing it in a real airplane.

About our speaker: Keith has been passionate about aviation and computing from the age of 11. He is an instrument rated pilot, flying a Lancair 360 out of nearby Lincoln Park.

Meetings are usually held on the second Thursday of every month. Members and non-members are welcomed to attend.

An Evening with Chris Ford, Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Docent

photoMid-Atlantic Pilots Association

RSVPs are expected. Walk-ins welcomed! Bring a friend!

 - Social – 6:00pm

 - Dinner – 7:00pm

 - Guest Program – 8:00pm

$25 per person will be collected at the door and includes buffet dinner.

Formed in 1957, this year marks the 54th anniversary of the Mid-Atlantic Pilots Association, a non-profit flying organization dedicated to air safety, aviation education and flying camaraderie. All levels of pilots, student pilots and aviation enthusiasts are invited to join.

Thanks to the efforts of MAPA member Susan Loricchio and Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Airshow Director Neill Herman, we are featuring Aerodrome Docent Chis Ford, a nine year veteran at Old Rhinebeck but one who has been a regular at Old Rhinebeck for 22 of his 24 years!

Chris will give us an overview of Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome and their airshows and discuss details about some of the unique aircraft in the Aerodrome’s collection such as their1909 Bleriot monoplane, the oldest flying airplane in the U.S. He will also feature some of this year’s centennials, as there are quite a few for 2011. It is the centennial of naval aviation, and the very first airplane the navy purchased was a Curtiss Model D much like the replica in the Aerodrome collection.

It is also the centennial of the first transcontinental flight, made by Cal Rodgers in a Wright EX. (There is a Wright EX on static display at the Aerodrome in their pioneer hangar.)

On Sept. 23rd, it will also be the centennial of the first airmail flight. That flight was accomplished in a 1911 Bleriot monoplane equipped with a rotary engine. (There is also an original 1911 Bleriot on static display in their main museum building.).  We’ll get to see some airshow footage and maybe try a WW1 Flight simulator.

About himself, Chris says:

“I’ve been working at the Aerodrome since I was sixteen. I was hooked long before then though, my parents started taking me to the Aerodrome when I was two. Little did they know the monster they’d created! We ended up going at least twice a year until I started volunteering nine years ago.
“When I showed up at the Aerodrome to work I had leather gloves with me, I thought they’d have me digging a ditch somewhere. I didn’t think they’d let me anywhere near the aeroplanes. So I was astounded when I was told I’d be able to help get the planes ready for the airshow. I was further amazed when I was told I could start learning how to wing run the following week. (The old planes don’t handle well on the ground and runners help maintain directional control while taxiing.)
“Looking back, being part of such a wonderful place probably kept me out of trouble as a teen. These days in addition to being a member of the airshow ground crew I also serve as an official docent to the museum. I provide guided tours and presentations about the Aerodrome and antique aviation, which is what brings me to the Mid-Atlantic Pilots Association dinner. As for flying antique aircraft, I have had the privilege of flying several from the co-pilots seat. I must confess I’m still working on my private certificate as time and money allow. These days I train in a 1946 Aeronca Champ. (I figure I should get used to dragging my tail now since I want to fly at the Aerodrome!)”

An Evening with Eric Sanderman, Cirrus Aircraft

RSVPs are expected. Walk-ins welcomed! Bring a friend!

– Social – 6:00pm

– Dinner – 7:00pm

– Guest Program – 8:00pm

$25 per person will be collected at the door and includes buffet dinner.

Formed in 1957, this year marks the 54th anniversary of the Mid-Atlantic Pilots Association, a non-profit flying organization dedicated to air safety, aviation education and flying camaraderie. All levels of pilots, student pilots and aviation enthusiasts are invited to join.

About our speaker:

Eric Sanderman is the NY & NJ – Regional Director for Cirrus Aircraft. Cirrus has been the leading seller of 4 seat piston engine aircraft for over eight years. Their New York office is based at the Millionair FBO at White Plains, Westchester County Airport (HPN).

Mr. Sanderman practiced as a CPA for 17 years before joining Cirrus Aircraft. He is a graduate of San Diego State University, School of Accountancy. Before starting his own firm, Eric was a staff professional at Deloitte & Touche and KPMG Peat Marwick. Then he founded and ran a 10 person accounting & consulting firm in San Diego, CA. His firm specialized in the design and implementation of accounting & information systems. His clients were spread out from San Diego to Northern California and East into Nevada and Arizona.

Having such far-flung clients, Eric became a private pilot and used his airplane to ease the travel burden. In 2003, he purchased a share in a Cirrus airplane at Montgomery Field in San Diego and later became an owner of another Cirrus, which was then leased to one of the largest flying clubs in the world – Plus One Flyers in San Diego.  From 2003 to 2005, Eric added nearly 400 hours in his logbook flying to his clients in the San Francisco Bay area, Sacramento, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Ventura County.

As the lead partner in his firm, his job was to bring in new clients. That’s where he began to express an aptitude for sales. After buying his second Cirrus, the Southern California rep for Cirrus convinced Eric to try his hand at selling the world’s leading airplane. Ready for a professional change and a new challenge in his life, Eric sold his interest in the consulting firm and moved from San Diego to New York to pursue every pilot’s dream of getting paid to fly airplanes!

Since joining Cirrus in March 2005 and completing his demo pilot training in cold and snowy Duluth Minnesota, Eric has logged another 3,500 hours giving demo and delivery flights in every version of Cirrus from the modest SR20 to the high performance SR22 Turbo. He’ll be sharing with us his experience as a demo pilot and lots of insider information about Cirrus and its products.

Close Calls, Lessons Learned – MAPA’s Annual Kathy Jaffe Safety Seminar

photoMid-Atlantic Pilots Association

NOTE: SPECIAL DATE AND LOCATION (SEE BELOW)

Featuring: Close Calls, Lessons Learned

Speaker: Bruce Landsberg, President, AOPA Air Safety Foundation

All of us have made mistakes, some more harrowing than others. The key is learning from those mistakes.

Close Calls, Lessons Learned is the new seminar from the Air Safety Institute that features real pilots telling their real stories. Some are familiar stories, others are unique.

You’ll see a CFI and his student tell the story of losing a prop in flight. A Mooney pilot talks of surviving a crash in Oregon. One pilot shares how he lost control in the too-often-repeated event of going VFR into IMC. And one pilot shares how getting distracted can result in mistakes.

About Our Speaker:

Bruce Landsberg has lead the AOPA Air Safety Foundation since May 1992. During his tenure, ASF has become the leading general aviation safety organization in the world and has been recognized with numerous awards on safety program excellence. He writes the monthly “Safety Pilot” column in AOPA Pilot magazine, a popular weekly blog in AOPA ePilot, and is a periodic contributor to AOPA Flight Training magazine. He represents general aviation safety interests before FAA, NTSB, National Weather Service, and various industry and international groups. ASF conducts free educational seminars all over the country and recertifies thousands of flight instructors annually. Additionally, it offers a world class website with more than 30,000 online course completions monthly.

Prior to joining ASF, Landsberg had careers with FlightSafety International in Wichita, Kansas, and Cessna Aircraft Company in marketing, safety education and business development.

A former U.S. Air Force officer, he holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in industrial technology from the University of Maryland.

Landsberg has logged more than 6,000 hours with airline transport pilot (ATP), single-engine, multiengine, and instrument flight instructor certificates, and has been an AOPA member for more than 35 years.

Richard Green has pretty much done it all in aviation. A retired American Airlines Captain in the A-310 and A-600R, and Boeing 727 with 30,000 hours of accumulated flight time his resume is awsome. He’ll be with us on Thursday March 10 to share some of his extensive aviation knowlwdge with us and discuss “Airworthiness”, which Wikapedia says ” is a term used to describe whether an aircraft has been certified as suitable for safe flight”. Richard will tell us what airworthiness means to the FAA and how it applies in the real world to us and our aircraft.

Spend an informative and educational evening with Richard at our meeting on Thursday March 10, 2011. You’ll be glad you did.
